Features

A coffee list you can actually trust

Star ratings tell you whether people liked a place. They don't tell you whether anyone behind the bar cares about the craft. Practice Bean does.

Only shops that pass the Standard

Every listed shop has been checked on six criteria: traditional recipes, a craft espresso machine, scales, milk temperature, milk texture and latte art. No exceptions.

Find one near you

Search any city or state, browse the map, or tap Near you and set a radius, from one mile to a hundred. Directions are one tap away.

Know the bar before you go

See each shop's espresso machine and grinder, its brew methods and milk options, its hours, and why it was certified.

Rate every cup on the Odo-Meter

Log a visit, set the 0–10 dial, add a few notes, and build your own record of every shop you've tried.

See where your friends drink

Add friends to follow their ratings and notes, and see what they've logged lately right on your home screen.

Your log stays yours

Only you and the friends you accept can see your ratings and notes. There are no ads, and you can delete your account at any time.

How it works

From a new city to a great cortado

No more scrolling through reviews, hoping a five-star latte doesn't turn out to be a caramel milkshake.

1

Search where you're headed

Type a city, or tap Near you when you land. Every shop you see has already passed the Standard.

2

Go get a proper coffee

Check the hours, tap for directions, and order with confidence: a macchiato that's actually a macchiato.

3

Log it and share it

Rate the cup, jot down what stood out, and your friends will know where to go next time they're in town.

A screen from Practice Bean

Built by coffee people

Started behind a bar, not in a boardroom

Practice Bean began with a barista from Oklahoma City on a trip to Colorado, trying shop after shop and finding nothing worth drinking. Online reviews were no help, because there was no standard behind them. So we wrote one.

  • Shops are visited more than once before they're certified
  • The full Standard is published in the app, so you can see what we look for
  • Certified shops get a window sticker marked with the year. An out-of-date sticker means the certification has lapsed

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Practice Bean free?

Yes. Practice Bean is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases.

How does a shop get certified?

Our evaluators visit anonymously, as regular customers, more than once, and check the shop against the six criteria of the Standard. Shops don't know they're being evaluated, they can't pay for certification, and every certification is re-evaluated each year.

Why aren't there any shops in my city?

Either we've evaluated the shops there and none met the Standard yet, or we haven't made it to your city yet. We're a small, self-funded team, so the list is still growing.

I know a great shop, or I own one. How do I get it evaluated?

Email us at admin@odocoffee.com with the shop's name and city, and we'll add it to the list of shops to consider for an evaluation.

Do I need an account?

Not to browse. You can search, use the map and see shops near you without signing in. To log visits and add friends, create a free account with your email, Google, or Apple (on iPhone).

Who can see my ratings and notes?

Only you and the friends you've accepted. Other people can find you by your display name to send a friend request, but they can't see your log unless you accept. The details are in our Privacy Policy, and you can delete your account in the app at any time (here's how).

How do I get help?

Head over to the support page and email us. A real person reads every message.
